What is Steam Y Strainer?

Steam Y strainer, with the use of a perforated or wire mesh straining screen, mechanically removes solids from flowing steam piping systems and is also used to protect equipment. We have right products for applications from a simple low pressure cast iron threaded strainer to a large, high pressure special alloy unit with a custom cap design. Steam strainers are available in a wide variety of materials and ANSI Classes.

Function of Steam Y Strainer

Steam Y Strainers are important components of steam systems to protect equipment from potential damage due to dirt and other particles that may be carried by the steam flow. During system start-up and flushing, steam Y strainers may be placed upstream of pumps to protect them from construction debris that may have been left in the pipe. Permanent steam Y strainers may be installed upstream of control valves, traps, and instruments to protect them from corrosion products that may become dislodged and carried throughout the steam system.

Use of Steam Y Strainer

Steam Y Strainers are typically used in applications where the amount of solids to be removed is small, and where frequent clean-out is not required. They are most often installed in gaseous services such as steam, air, nitrogen, natural gas, etc. The compact, cylindrical shape of the steam Y strainer is very strong and can readily accommodate the high pressures that are common in this type of service. Pressures up to 6,000 psi are not unusual. When steam is being handled, high temperature can be an additional complicating factor. A steam pressure of 1500 psi will often be found at temperatures of 1,000°F.

Material Information of Steam Y Strainer

Steam Y strainers can come in a variety of materials including cast Iron, Bronze, Steel, Stainless Steel, Super Duplex Stainless Steel, Titanium, Cast Alloy 20, Cast Chrome-Moly.

Manufacturing Process of Steam Y Strainer

Casting and forging are the general process to make steam Y strainer body depends on the working environment and working pressure, both of which require mold/die of the steam Y strainer shape to be built. Generally, for high pressure application or working environment that high level safety is required, forging is the optimal solution for steam Y strainer compared with casting process that may have potential porosity issue. Secondary machining is required to cut the thread of steam Y strainer for pipe connecting. Also, considering the high temperature working environment, high temperature paint is selected for steam Y strainer for rust protection.
